tumblr? also stoves and a question about english

There are a few thrift store finds from last month I've been meaning post about, but I keep forgetting I need daylight to photograph them properly. Yeah, I know. It's probably time for a trip to IKEA's lighting department - not this month, though, since I put all my doll money into that Dollmore body I've been talking about. We'll see how much I regret it at the end of the month, but with the dollar rising and the free shipping offer, I figured it's now or never. It'll be good to have an actual strung doll around to familiarize myself with the mechanism, especially if I'm going to make my own.

Also, I've been thinking of maybe moving the blogging to Tumblr instead: it's a better platform for short smalltalk-y posts or a single (blurry) photo, and I don't write a lot of long essays or reviews anyway. The major downside is only registered users can comment on posts, but you can always allow anonymous questions. On the other hand, I already post most of my photos to flickr anyway, and I sometimes feel just having this blog in addition is a bit redundant (although it's great for following blogs). So I should probably concentrate on one platform instead of trying to *~build a media empire~* or something, but which one? (And they said computers would make our lives easier!)

Anyway, today's thrift store find is a Dora the Explora' Explorer kitchen ...section? You know: the piece with a stove with a cupboard above. The other parts of the set were nowhere be found, so I don't know what I'm missing out on, but the stove top lights up when you press a button which is pretty cool. Plus it's not pink! It is covered in Dora the Explorer stickers though, so not entirely realistic, but I guess I can pretend Kelly or Chelsea or someone put them there.

Speaking of which, here's something that's been bugging me: why are all kitchen sets supposedly made for 11½'' dolls so low? I've passed on nice kitchen sets because I thought they were for smaller scale dolls, before I realized they're all like that. I guess it's nice for Barbie to be able to reach the highest shelves without asking Ken for help, but I still would prefer if they had sacrificed a few extra cm2 of plastic to make them look more realistic. (Not that I've ever really bothered with trying to build a realistic diorama for my dolls to live in - their entire world is basically an IKEA couch in the middle of nowhere, aka the kitchen table. But still!)

Question of the day: I just realized I have no idea what the round parts on top of the stove top that heat up and that you put pots on to cook food are actually called in English. Weird, but true. Google gave me a bunch of technical terms that all seem to refer to one specific type of stove only - is there a good everyday word that covers them all?
You know, these things.

  1. The stove-top thingies are burners.

The proportions of fashion-doll furniture seem to be just... random. A couple months ago at the swap meet, I realized the reason Barbie can get so much furniture into houses with so little depth is that some of it's 1:8 rather than 1:6 -- and a lot of it is 1:8 on one dimension and 1:6 on others.

Are there other fashion doll people on Tumblr?

    1. And some of the furniture is just stickers, so that helps too. :) The IKEA Huset set is more like 1/8 I think, but some parts work better than others.

  2. Lol, I have a tumblr specifically because I can't sit down and write essays. Most of my posts are sporadic and stuff so yeah. Most of it is copy and pasted from my flickr regardless, but I do sneak some random posts onto Tumblr heh.

I also have my doll a day blog there too cuz of the multiple blogs feature on Tumblr

There's some doll fashion people on Tumblr but I find its mainly Monster High/Ever After High people lol

    1. There seems to be a lot of BJD blogs too, and the MH/EAH is maybe more about the web series fandom. But I know a few people from DolliehSanctuary have tumblogs.

  3. I have my Blogger and a Youtube account. That's about all I can handle. I know people on Youtube are saying, "Check me out on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Reddit, etc." Oh my goodness, when do they sleep? I've never really noticed Blogger being overly chatty. I figured people posted what they want and some of us are just long winded, lol.

    1. Maybe they just want to register their username before anyone else does, some kind of SEO thing? And then do like Jawn and copy/paste their posts.

  4. "Are there other fashion doll people on Tumblr? " made me giggle, and then I giggled more when I saw that John was the next comment--because, yeah, OK, maybe John & I are most of the non-MH/EAH population on Tumblr... (yes, that's a bit of an exagegration) This is my Tumblr http://dollsahoy.tumblr.com/ (I don't have any doll-only blogs, so there's lots of other stuff mixed in.) The thing about Tumblr is that there's SO MUCH COMMUNITY there--it's a much stronger social network than Flickr. (Also, I personally feel like Flickr is a place for my ~pretty~ doll pictures, while Tumblr is a more 'anything goes' place...)

It's ultimately all a matter of personal preference, of course!

    1. Okay, I'm trying Tumblr (but not giving up Blogger). http://smallerplaces.tumblr.com/ I mostly want a place to put one-off photos that would otherwise have me bloggerizing twice a day.

"Anything goes" is definitely my impression of Tumblr so far.

    2. Anything goes sound pretty good to me, since I tend to overthink and procrastinate most of the time. Also I like the reblog system, which probably also helps with the community building. Although when I joined Flickr I was surprised there was ANY community there, since I only saw it as a place to dump photos.

  5. I'm on Tumblr, but I get responses on Blogger. Shrug. I follow Jawn P and Andrea W and DollCafe there. I post links to TheGreaterGoodsites and some doll stuff on Tumblr. If I had to choose, I'd stick with Blogger because Tumblr is like calling out into deep space - for me.

Your Blogger blog doesn't have to have essays as well as texts. I used to follow a photos only blog. I'd leave comments sometimes.

I wish you joy and success wherever you decide to go or stay ;-)

    1. Thanks, though if I go I'm probably not going very far away. :) Tumblr has lots of photo blogs, it's one of the things the platform is really good at imo. You can easily make a completely different blog layout to fit whatever sort of posts you want to make, even essays.

    2. I'm on <a href="http://hervoyel.tumblr.com>Tumblr</a> as well, and my experience has been similar to D7ana's. There's plenty to look at, but I haven't had a huge amount of interaction there - at least when it comes to dolls and toys. I used to keep a pop culture blog on Tumblr as well, and that was a more successful experiment (although it eventually felt more like work and less like fun, so I gave that one up).

  6. Tumblr seems more of a social media site although, according to my daughter, people don't comment much on posts there. As for your stove question, I can't answer for American English but in Australia, on electric stoves we call them hotplates and on gas stoves either burners or rings. Actually we generally tend to say, "I've turned on the stove" or "Can you check the saucepan on the stove?" rather than specifically referring to the burners.

    1. It seems tumblr has reblogging and tagging instead of old-fashioned commenting, but I like how interactive that makes the posts.

Thanks, at least I have a few different words to choose from now!

  8. Hello,
In The UK we call the top of the oven a Hob and those circular parts either Rings or Hob plates depending on the style, if they are on a Gas Stove then we call them Burners.
As for Tumblr, there are a few dolly people over there but not enough to hold my attention, which is why I still haven't gone through all the motions of moving everything over there, hmm I don't know give it a go and if you don't like it you can always come back!
    Take care,
    Herbs x.

    1. Oh I see - calling it burner makes less sense on an electrical stove, that's what had me confused. Mostly I considered moving because I like Tumblr's reblogging function, but if nobody else is there it's kind of pointless...

    1. I'm actually kind of boycotting Pinterest since the mobile version is so user-unfriendly for non-members... but I might crack if you keep sending me links. :)
